Nigeria's House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen vows to repeal outdated business laws

Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen announced that the National Assembly will repeal obsolete laws that impede investment and introduce reforms to make Nigeria’s business environment more competitive. He said the House will focus on regulatory certainty, reducing the cost of doing business, expanding access to finance and supporting local manufacturing, agriculture and the African Continental Free Trade Area. Tajudeen highlighted challenges raised by business leaders, including high borrowing costs, foreign‑exchange volatility, multiple taxation, unreliable electricity, insecurity and policy uncertainty, and pledged a permanent National Assembly‑Business Executive Roundtable to sustain dialogue.

At the same event, Tajudeen called on Nigerian youths to take a leading role in the 2027 general elections, urging them to participate through the Youth Town Hall platform. He noted that youth‑driven proposals have shaped constitutional amendment bills, the National Youth Service Corps Reform Bill and a proposed Youth Welfare Scheme Fund Bill, and that reforms in education financing, taxation, electricity, cybersecurity and the digital economy aim to create opportunities for young Nigerians. The Minister of Youth Development praised the institutionalisation of the Youth Town Hall and listed programmes such as the Nigerian Youth Academy, digital‑skills initiatives, youth enterprise support and a Youth Green Fund.
