Nigeria's ICPC Moves to Sanction Doctor Over Alleged Fake Report for Ex-Governor El-Rufai

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has filed a petition with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) seeking an investigation and possible disciplinary action against Professor Bello Abubakar, a chief consultant oncologist at the National Hospital, Abuja. The commission alleges that Abubakar issued a medical report dated 10 June 2026 that was used by former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai to support bail applications in ongoing corruption cases, but the hospital could find no record of El‑Rufai as a patient.

The ICPC’s petition, based on an affidavit filed on 7 July 2026 before the High Court of Nasarawa State, requests that the MDCN’s Medical Practitioners Investigating Panel conduct a thorough and swift investigation into the alleged professional misconduct. The MDCN acknowledged receipt of the complaint on 8 July and will determine whether the matter should be referred to its disciplinary tribunal. The allegations have not yet been established by any court or tribunal.
