Nigeria's INEC Boosts Election Technology Ahead of 2027 Vote

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced it will deploy an additional 664 backup Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices, complementing the 3,763 units scheduled for the August 15, 2026 Osun governorship election. The devices will verify voters with valid PVCs and upload results directly to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to improve transparency. INEC also provided election‑related support materials for people with disabilities, the elderly and nursing mothers, and confirmed that security arrangements are in place, with the Osun State Commissioner of Police affirming preparedness.

Chairman Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan declared that the adoption of BVAS, IReV and other safeguards has ended the era of ballot‑box snatching and manual result manipulation ahead of the 2027 general elections. He warned that technology alone cannot ensure credibility without an informed electorate, citing low voter turnout and confusion in recent polls. Amupitan called for intensified voter education and a partnership with the National Orientation Agency to combat misinformation and encourage participation.
