Nigeria's INEC criticized for absence at ICPC election monitoring training
Stakeholders have expressed disappointment regarding the absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from a capacity-building training session organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The training was designed to equip members of the National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC) with skills for effective election monitoring ahead of the 2027 general elections. Key focus areas included accessing grants for grassroots anti-corruption advocacy and improving the delivery of commission messages to citizens.
Idris Abu, a member of NACC and Executive Director of the Organisation of People’s Voice, stated that INEC’s absence suggests a lack of seriousness regarding transparency and credible elections. He emphasized that collaboration between INEC, the ICPC, and NACC is essential for voter education, information access, and monitoring vote-buying to prevent electoral corruption and grant manipulation.
