Nigeria's INEC Faces Court Challenges and Expands Voter Services

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is confronting at least six major court cases that could reshape the timeline and conduct of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The most significant suits, filed by the Youth Party and the Social Democratic Party, challenge the commission’s revised election timetable, alleging it exceeds powers granted by the Electoral Act. A federal high court nullified portions of the timetable, prompting INEC to appeal the rulings, with judgments pending in the Court of Appeal.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is awaiting a separate court judgment on its request that INEC recognise its Interim National Working Committee, while the party denies rumors of internal legal threats.

In parallel, INEC has announced inclusive measures for persons with disabilities in Nasarawa State, deploying assistive materials and considering recruitment of disabled persons as ad hoc staff. The commission also launched a self‑service online voter registration platform, extending the Continuous Voter Registration exercise to July 26 to improve accessibility and participation.
