Nigeria's INEC Publishes 2027 Candidates' Credentials for Public Scrutiny
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began a mandatory public display of Form EC9 – containing personal particulars, academic credentials and sworn affidavits of all presidential, senatorial and House of Representatives candidates – on 1 August 2026. The exercise, required by Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, is being carried out at the INEC Lagos State office in Sabo‑Yaba and at local government offices across the country.
Displayed candidates include President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (All Progressives Congress), his running‑mate Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (African Democratic Congress) and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi (Nigerian Democratic Congress). Tinubu’s form shows a B.Sc. in Business Administration from Chicago State University (awarded with honours on 22 June 1979) and his employment history with Mobil Nigeria, Lagos State Government and the Federal Government. Shettima’s form records primary education at Lamisula I Primary School (1972‑1978), secondary at Government Secondary School Potiskum (June 1983), a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture from University of Maiduguri (August 1989) and an MSc in Agricultural Economics from University of Ibadan.
INEC urges the public, political parties and civil society to inspect the documents and states that anyone who believes a candidate has submitted false information may seek legal redress under the Electoral Act.
