Nigeria's Information Minister urges national unity ahead of 2027 elections

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on political actors, media practitioners, and citizens to prioritize national unity over ethnic, religious, and partisan interests. Speaking in Calabar, Cross River State, Idris emphasized the importance of resisting misinformation, hate speech, and incitement as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

The remarks coincided with the official reactivation of the remodeled Cross River State Newspaper Corporation, now known as the Cross River Information Hub, and the inauguration of a new state-of-the-art Government Printing Press. Idris noted that these developments are intended to strengthen credible journalism, effective government communication, and the preservation of institutional memory.

Idris commended Cross River State Governor Bassey Edet Otu for the initiative and reiterated the administration of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to a peaceful and transparent electoral process. He stated that rebuilding public trust in government communication is a primary responsibility, noting that the government must earn such trust through honesty and clarity.
