Nigeria's Jigawa and Ogun states commit billions to expand dairy sector

Jigawa State Government has launched a ₦7 billion dairy development programme that will introduce improved cattle breeds from the United Kingdom and India through artificial insemination. The plan calls for inseminating 6,500 cattle initially, expanding to 25,000, with a target of over 60,000 genetically improved animals, alongside ₦4.5 billion earmarked for restoring grazing reserves. Thirteen state scientists will train in India and then train 350 newly recruited youth technicians to run the programme, which aims to raise milk output, create jobs and position Jigawa as a major dairy producer.

Ogun State secured a $250 million investment from Pure Dairy Herd to build Nigeria’s largest dairy farm in Itoro, Yewa South, initially housing about 10,000 cows. The project is expected to significantly boost domestic milk production, generate substantial employment and stimulate related economic activity. The investors also pledged road improvements and compensation for affected landowners, reflecting the state’s push to attract strategic agricultural investments.
