Nigeria’s judiciary faces transition ahead of 2027 elections
The Nigerian judiciary is entering a period of significant transition as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. During the opening of the judicial year at the Supreme Court in Abuja, Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun delivered the State of the Administration of Justice report, highlighting an expected increase in election petitions and political disputes.
The judiciary is also facing a wave of retirements among senior judges. Following the retirement of Ibrahim Mohammed Saulawa, several other Justices, including Uwani Abba-Aji and Helen Ogunwumiju, are scheduled to retire through 2027. This turnover necessitates a process of renewal managed by the Judicial Service Commissions and the National Judicial Council.
In a separate development, the 32nd Chief Justice of Nigeria Sports Competition has commenced in Kaduna State. Organized by the National Sports Association for Judiciary (NASAJ), the event runs until October 29 and aims to foster unity, physical fitness, and professional camaraderie among judicial officers and staff from across the federation.
