Nigeria’s Judiciary Under Fire as Odinkalu Blames Corruption for Electoral Insecurity

Former National Human Rights Commission chairman Prof. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu warned that Nigeria’s judiciary has been “captured” by family syndicates that control appointments and shield corrupt judges, describing specific rulings by Justices Peter Lifu and Dashen as manifestly corrupt. He said the National Judicial Council’s doctrines filter out over 70% of complaints, effectively protecting errant judges, and coined the term “genitalisation of the Nigerian judiciary” to depict personal ties influencing decisions.

Odinkalu added that the illegitimacy of electoral mandates is the chief source of the country’s insecurity. Citing voter disenfranchisement, he stated, “The single biggest source of insecurity in Nigeria is the illegitimacy of electoral mandates,” and warned that when citizens feel their votes do not count and courts are perceived as bought, they turn to violence and vigilantism.
