Nigeria's LPG Prices Jump 40‑66% as Rainy‑Season Demand Outstrips Supply

Prices for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly called cooking gas, have surged by 40 to 66 percent across Abuja and surrounding areas, rising from N1,000‑N1,200 per kilogram to as high as N1,400‑N2,000 per kilogram.

Spokespersons for the Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) and Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO) – Chinedu Ukadike and Taofeek Lawal – attribute the spike to heightened demand during the rainy season, limited supply, and a shortage of alternative household fuels. Both said the imbalance between demand and the available LPG product pool is driving the price hike.

Marketers expect prices to fall once additional operators, such as the new Dangote Refinery, increase market participation and expand supply. The surge adds to broader economic pressure on Nigerians facing high inflation and low wages.
