Nigeria Presidency Rejects Peter Obi’s Allegations of Targeted Threats

Presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) said in a televised interview that he might not be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election, alleging that the federal government was deliberately frustrating his personal and business activities, citing an airport incident in which his car was locked while others were not. He also claimed that supporters were avoiding public association with him for fear of reprisals.

The Presidency, through Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, dismissed Obi’s statements as unfounded, describing them as a fabricated narrative aimed at garnering sympathy. Onanuga said the government has not targeted Obi or his interests in Fidelity Bank and accused the candidate of serial lying.

The NDC‑Peter Obi Support Network (NDC‑POSN) called on the federal government and security agencies to investigate the alleged intimidation, provide protection for Obi and other opposition figures, and ensure a transparent electoral process. Separate comments from Governor David Umahi downplayed Obi as a political threat to President Bola Tinubu, and Obi also urged fair justice after a viral video involving the wife of Governor Nasir El‑Rufai.
