Nigeria's NAFDAC Cracks Down on Illegal Sachet Alcohol Production

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) announced that illegal factories are still producing banned sachet‑packaged alcoholic drinks and PET‑bottled spirits under 200 ml despite a nationwide ban introduced to curb under‑age drinking and alcohol abuse. Director‑General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye told a press briefing in Lagos that enforcement teams uncovered concealed production sites in Lagos, Ogun and other states, seizing 100 ml PET bottles and packaging material dated as late as 23 July 2026. Manufacturers had moved equipment to unregistered facilities and removed company signboards to hide their operations. During the raids, an officer was narrowly stabbed and another was assaulted, prompting NAFDAC to warn that such attacks will be prosecuted. The agency reiterated that manufacturers, distributors and retailers flouting the directive will face severe sanctions, and that the mop‑up operation will continue until all prohibited products are removed from the market.
