Nigeria's NAFDAC uncovers storage site for counterfeit alcohol bottles
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has discovered a residential building in Lagos being used to store empty bottles for the production of counterfeit alcoholic beverages. During an operation in the Agbado Oke-Odo area, investigators found over 100 sacks of empty bottles of various sizes and brands, including Action Bitter and Royal Circle Premium Whiskey.
Kunle Ojo, an Assistant Director in NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, stated that the site was used to supply bottles to suspected counterfeiters. The agency destroyed the stockpiled materials to prevent their reuse in manufacturing unsafe drinks.
In a separate development, a man has publicly claimed that members of the Igbo ethnic group are involved in the production of fake alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in Nigeria, sparking significant social media debate regarding the ethnic dimensions of the counterfeit goods crisis.
