Nigeria’s National Health Insurance Authority Reaches 22 Million Enrollees
The Nigerian National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) reported that its pool of policyholders has risen to 22.03 million, reflecting a 35 % year‑on‑year increase. Director‑General Kelechi Ohiri said the growth shows accelerating acceptance of the mandatory health‑insurance scheme and the government’s push toward universal health coverage.
The agency highlighted several operational improvements: an 87 % complaint‑resolution rate with 3,878 disputes settled, capitation payments to providers up 93 %, and fee‑for‑service reimbursements up 378 %. It also assessed 7,592 health facilities under the SafeCare framework and expanded services for vulnerable groups, including maternity care for over 48,500 pregnant women. These measures align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and broader health‑sector reforms.
