Nigeria's National Population Commission expands digital birth and death registration across Sokoto, Ekiti and Kwara

The National Population Commission (NPC) has rolled out its electronic civil registration and vital statistics (E-CRVS) system in several Nigerian states. In Sokoto, Federal Commissioner Alhaji Abdullahi Chiso‑Dattijo launched an e‑birth registration platform, urging parents, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to enrol newborns and highlighting the system’s role in legal identity and service delivery. UNICEF supported the effort with digital printers in 23 local government areas.

In Ekiti, Federal Commissioner Kola Alabi announced the commencement of full digital birth and death registration, noting that Nigeria records roughly five million births each year but that registration coverage stands at about 57% for births and below 20% for deaths. The rollout is part of the nationwide VitalReg platform, which began on 1 July 2026 across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and the NPC plans to increase registration centres from 4,011 to about 8,000.

In Kwara, the NPC, together with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and development partners including UNICEF, held a two‑day training for ward registrars to decentralise and strengthen birth registration. The programme seeks to integrate registration with the National Identification Number system and expand services to community structures.
