Nigeria's National Youth Service Corps faces reform and security calls

Nigeria's National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is facing scrutiny regarding its effectiveness and the safety of its participants. Chidiebere Ogbu, President of the African Diaspora Union (AFRIDU), has called for the program to be transformed into a compulsory vocational skills training initiative. Ogbu argues that current educational models focus too heavily on theoretical knowledge, leaving graduates ill-equipped for the job market. This comes as Nigeria prepares to implement its first major NYSC reform in 53 years, which aims to enhance training in entrepreneurship, leadership, and digital skills.

Simultaneously, the program is grappling with severe security challenges. Recent incidents of mass abductions involving prospective corps members have raised questions about the viability of the scheme in the current security climate. In October, gunmen abducted 20 participants traveling through Imo State, though they were later rescued by security agencies. These security risks, combined with high youth unemployment and a significant rate of youth not in employment, education, or training (NEET), have placed the future of the national service program under intense debate.
