Nigeria faces infrastructure pressure as data demand surges 47%
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and industry stakeholders are addressing a surge in data demand, which rose nearly 47 percent to 1.6 million terabytes in July 2026. This rapid growth is outpacing existing network capacity, prompting calls for increased investment in broadband, fiber infrastructure, and reliable electricity.
To bridge the digital divide, the NCC has launched a free daily 100MB data initiative for eligible learners on networks including MTN, Airtel, and Glo. Additionally, a new roadmap aims to attract investment through partnerships, including a proposed blended funding model for rural areas. This model would combine resources from the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) for telecom components, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) for power, and state governments for land and security.
Despite mobile broadband covering 90 percent of the population, challenges remain, including low smartphone ownership (27 percent) and broadband penetration (57.4 percent). Stakeholders also highlighted the need to protect physical infrastructure, noting that thousands of fiber-cut incidents caused by construction continue to disrupt services and the broader digital economy.
