Nigeria's NIPOST Initiates Digital Postcode for Every Building

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) announced the rollout of a National Digital Postcode System that will assign a unique, machine‑readable address to every addressable building across the country. Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi said the initiative, presented during the Post Code Delineation Model Validation 2026 in Abuja, aims to place Nigeria among the first African nations with unit‑level postcodes, improving logistics, emergency response, and national planning.

The project accounts for Nigeria's diverse geography, tailoring mapping and postcode allocation to the distinct building densities and topographies of each state—from the Sahel‑like north to the tropical south. By aligning postcode boundaries with existing administrative units and testing aerially mapped polygons against ground realities, NIPOST seeks a standardized, technology‑driven addressing framework that resolves long‑standing inefficiencies in mail delivery and location identification.
