Nigerian Navy Receives Three New Vessels as President Tinubu Highlights Maritime Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commissioned three new Nigerian naval vessels – NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila and NNS Gurara – during the 2026 International Fleet Review held at Lagos’s Eko Atlantic waterfront. The ceremony marked the Navy’s 70‑year anniversary and Tinubu praised the service’s role in safeguarding the country’s maritime domain.

Tinubu highlighted the Navy’s achievements in curbing piracy, crude‑oil theft, illegal fishing and other trans‑national crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, noting that these gains have boosted oil production, national revenue and investor confidence. He also commended the Navy’s contributions to counter‑terrorism and counter‑insurgency operations across Nigeria.

The president inaugurated the Combined Maritime Task Force, a regional initiative involving Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and reiterated the government’s commitment to further modernise the fleet with newer platforms, surveillance systems, unmanned aerial vehicles and artificial‑intelligence tools. The Navy’s newly inducted Marines were also celebrated as an additional asset for maritime and inland security.
