Nigeria's North backs Peter Obi-Kwankwaso ticket amid unity debate

Chieftain Buba Galadima of the Nigeria Democratic Congress defended northern support for the Peter Obi–Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presidential ticket, saying such north‑south cooperation has deep roots in the country's history. He cited pre‑independence alliances between the Northern People’s Congress and the National Council of Nigerian Citizens and the coalition government that followed independence in 1960, arguing that the current partnership follows a long‑standing tradition of national unity.

The Arewa Consultative Forum, reacting to former militant leader Asari Dokubo’s declaration of a Biafra Customary Government, reiterated its belief in a united Nigeria and denied any intention to create an Arewa Republic. Forum National Publicity Secretary Emmanuel Yawe said, “We believe in one Nigeria… we are not interested in the Arewa Republic,” emphasizing the lessons of the civil war and rejecting secessionist calls.
