Nigeria's NPHCDA renovates over 3,500 primary healthcare facilities

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has completed the renovation and handover of 3,526 primary healthcare facilities across Nigeria. Work is currently ongoing at an additional 908 centers as part of a broader effort to improve access to basic medical services.

Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director and CEO of the NPHCDA, reported that the agency has either completed or is nearing completion of the revitalization of 4,434 facilities nationwide. This progress includes efforts to ensure Level 2 facilities are available in every ward. The agency is utilizing an equity-based approach, prioritizing basic amenities such as water, sanitation, and solar-powered electricity to ensure reliable service delivery.

Despite these advancements, Aina noted that significant challenges remain, stating that only 53 percent of the approximately 27,000 monitored primary healthcare centers are currently functional at Level 1 or Level 2.

The NPHCDA has urged state and local governments to take greater responsibility for the maintenance of these facilities and the permanent employment of health workers. While the federal government provides policy direction and infrastructure support, the agency emphasized that subnational governments must manage the effective operation of these centers to sustain healthcare services.
