Nigeria's NYSC to switch to Adire uniform as reforms reshape the scheme

The Federal Executive Council approved the first comprehensive overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) since its creation in 1973. Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande told Channels Television that the reform package includes a proposal to replace the iconic khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric to boost Nigeria’s textile industry, saying, “It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria… Let’s put our money back into the country.” He also announced that corps members will be posted according to their academic qualifications and that deployment will consider security conditions, allowing graduates to serve in regions where they studied.

Later, Olawande clarified on his official X account that no final decision has been taken on the fabric or design, stating, “No final decision has been taken on the fabric or design,” and that the government is still consulting stakeholders.

The reforms also shift operational leadership from military to civilian management while retaining the military’s security role. In line with the national changes, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo inaugurated the state’s NYSC Governing Board, reaffirming commitment to youth development and the scheme’s objectives.
