Nigeria's payment landscape set for AI-driven digital expansion

Payments across West Africa have shifted from speculative concepts to daily reality for millions, with Nigeria leading the transformation. Technological advances such as artificial intelligence, embedded finance, and blockchain are embedding payment services more deeply into commerce and everyday life, making transactions smoother and often invisible to users. A recent KPMG banking survey found that six out of ten people in West Africa already rely on AI in their daily routines, underscoring strong demand for smarter financial services.

In Nigeria, regulatory reforms, mobile‑phone penetration, agent banking and digital platforms have expanded financial inclusion, allowing many to open accounts and build transaction histories for the first time. These digital records improve access to savings, insurance and credit for individuals and small businesses, while giving banks richer data on customer behaviour. Trust remains a central pillar, with smoother, faster, and more reliable payments seen as essential for broader economic participation.

The ongoing shift points toward a future where payments act as a hidden, trusted link between commerce, technology and economic opportunity, further accelerating financial inclusion across the region.
