Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso seal one‑term presidency pact for 2027 election

Vice‑presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) announced that presidential candidate Peter Obi has signed two written agreements committing him to serve only one four‑year term if elected in 2027, after which the presidency will return to the North. Kwankwaso said the accords were signed both with the party and personally between the two men, emphasizing that “we are all gentlemen” and that he “personally believe[s] him” to keep the pledge. He described the arrangement as a consensus to promote national unity, fairness and regional balance.

Kwankwaso also urged President Bola Tinubu to replace Vice‑President Kashim Shettima on the ruling APC ticket to achieve a religiously balanced ticket, noting the deadline for candidate substitution remains open. He linked the call to the broader strategy of presenting a balanced ticket for the 2027 election.

The agreements and Kwankwaso’s statements are aimed at reassuring voters that the NDC will honour the long‑standing zoning principle that the presidency rotates between Nigeria’s North and South.
