Nigeria’s Sani Abacha death fuels debate on presidential succession

A newly released memoir by former Department of State Services officer Dennis Amachree claims that former military ruler General Sani Abacha suffered a cardiac arrest during an intimate encounter at the Presidential Villa on 8 June 1998. Amachree says he participated in the investigation of the death, but his account is disputed by Abacha’s former chief of security, Major Hamza Al‑Mustapha, who has offered to produce CCTV footage that has never been released.

The controversy revives long‑standing questions about the circumstances of Abacha’s death and, more broadly, about what procedures govern the immediate aftermath when a Nigerian head of state dies. At the time, General Abdulsalami Abubakar assumed power the next day, later overseeing a transition to civilian rule. The renewed discussion highlights gaps in Nigeria’s historical record‑keeping and the institutional challenges of succession under both military and civilian regimes.
