Nigeria's security policy debate intensifies as Senate approves state police bill

Nigeria's Senate passed the State Police Bill with more than two‑thirds support, arguing the legislation will bring policing closer to communities and improve intelligence gathering. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele defended the vote, accusing opposition parties of politicising the issue and urging them to offer constructive ideas rather than partisan attacks. Opponents warned that state governors could misuse the new force for political gain and called for stronger safeguards.

Separately, Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, said he would negotiate with bandits willing to surrender while ordering decisive military action against those who refuse peace. His comments sparked criticism, recalling past amnesty attempts that failed to stop violence and raised concerns about rewarding criminals. Obi emphasised that poverty and governance failures drive insecurity, but argued negotiations should only follow overwhelming security victories.
