Nigeria's Senate and Niger State Assembly Suspend Legislative Sessions

The Nigerian Senate adjourned its emergency plenary on June 12, 2026, suspending consideration of the State Police Bill and other business to mourn the death of House of Representatives member Hon. Yaya Tongo of Gombe State. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the pause and a minute's silence before the chamber recessed, delaying the administration’s proposed constitutional amendment on state police.

In Niger State, the House of Assembly voted to suspend its plenary indefinitely, citing "unresolved issues" with the state executive. The motion was moved by Mohammed Abubakar‑Kabir (Ustaz) of Chanchaga constituency and seconded by Abdulrahman Gambo of Borgu. Although a counter‑motion was offered, Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkindaji oversaw a vote in which the majority supported suspension, and the assembly entered an executive session to discuss the matters.
