Nigeria's South-East Security Summit Calls for Police Reform, Tech Boost
The inaugural 2026 South‑East Regional Security Summit was held in Umuahia, Abia State, under the theme “Collaborative Approaches to Strengthening Security and Regional Stability.” Minister of Information Mohammed Idris said lasting peace in the South‑East is essential for Nigeria’s unity, economic growth and democratic stability, and outlined federal investments in infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, digital‑skills training and support for small businesses to address the socio‑economic drivers of insecurity.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu urged the creation of state police anchored on accountability, professionalism and service to the people, warning it must never become a tool for political repression. He also welcomed the government’s plan to expand the army from eight to twelve divisions and recruit about 28,000 additional personnel. Defence Minister General Christopher Musa stressed that security requires more than military action, calling for good governance, economic development and community engagement.
Stakeholders at the summit advocated for a shared regional security database and investment in technological tools such as drones, CCTV, geospatial mapping, forensic capabilities and automated vehicle identification to combat kidnapping, armed robbery and other crimes.
