Christian Association of Nigeria urges federal state of emergency over rising insecurity

The South‑West region of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by Bishop Barnabas Tunde Akin‑Akinsanya, called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity. The group said kidnappings, banditry and other violent crimes have escalated in Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo and Lagos, turning what were once isolated incidents into a national tragedy that threatens peace, economic stability and social cohesion.

CAN demanded that security agencies be equipped with modern surveillance technology, drones, intelligence systems, communication gadgets and rapid‑response capabilities. It also urged greater regional collaboration among governors, enhanced community‑based intelligence gathering, and technical support from friendly foreign partners. The association appealed for prayers and cautioned citizens to remain vigilant, avoid high‑risk travel and report suspicious activity.
