Nigeria's Tax Ombud expands services to tackle multiple taxation
Nigeria’s Office of the Tax Ombud (OTO), led by Dr John Nwabueze, reported receiving more than 20 genuine taxpayer complaints in its first three months, most of them involving state revenue services. Eight of those complaints were resolved within the statutory 14‑day period, with an additional seven days allowed where needed.
The office has broadened its capacity by adding accountants and legal experts to handle complex disputes, including potential cases on digital‑asset taxation. It also launched a digital complaints portal, a case‑management system, a toll‑free call centre and an SMS callback service to make redress easier. Plans are under way to establish OTO offices across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and to work with the Federal Government, state authorities and the Joint Revenue Board to curb the endemic practice of multiple taxation.
