Nigeria’s Tax Ombud to launch Taxpayer Bill of Rights

The Office of the Tax Ombud (OTO) has announced plans to launch a Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights and Obligations to enhance accountability and protection within Nigeria’s tax administration system. Dr. John Nwabueze, the Tax Ombud and Chief Executive, stated that the document will define the standards of fairness and transparency taxpayers should expect, alongside the legal obligations of citizens and businesses.

During a stakeholder engagement in Abuja, Nwabueze called on revenue-generating agencies to appoint dedicated liaison officers to assist in resolving taxpayer complaints. The initiative aims to increase voluntary compliance and build trust by ensuring taxpayers understand their rights and the avenues available for redress regarding administrative issues.

To improve accessibility, the OTO is expanding its physical presence beyond Abuja. Discussions are currently underway with state governments to establish zonal offices, with at least three expected to begin operations shortly. The OTO focuses on operational, procedural, and administrative complaints rather than judicial matters or disputes over tax assessments.
