Nigeria’s Tinubu government pledges over ₦1 trillion for tertiary education reforms
The Nigerian federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has allocated more than ₦1 trillion to transform the country’s tertiary education system over the past two years. Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa detailed the spending, including ₦250 billion for new student hostels, over ₦150 billion for rehabilitating existing hostels, classrooms and workshops, and more than ₦130 billion for refurbishing medical schools. Alausa emphasized that the investment removes financial barriers so that no qualified Nigerian is denied higher‑education opportunities because of poverty. He also announced the rollout of the National Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) and the Digitalised Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) to provide real‑time data on enrolment, teacher deployment and school resources. The minister urged state governments to complete the Annual School Census on the new platforms and to collaborate with the federal authorities to ensure the reforms achieve their intended impact.
