Nigeria's Muslim-Muslim Presidential Ticket Sparks Religious Tension Ahead of 2027 Election

President Bola Tinubu has again nominated former Borno governor Kashim Shettima, also a Muslim, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, repeating the Muslim‑Muslim ticket first presented in 2023. Critics argue the ticket breaches Nigeria’s constitutional principle of reflecting the country’s religious diversity and threatens national unity. Christian leaders, including the Christian Association of Nigeria and former Secretary to the Government Babachir Lawal, denounced the ticket as an anti‑Christian agenda that could fuel disharmony and hinder social and economic development. Former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro said the same‑faith ticket contributed to Tinubu’s loss in Lagos in 2023, citing voter fear that a Muslim‑only presidency might marginalise Christians.
