Nigeria: Tinubu orders states to reduce transport fares by October 1

President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s 36 state governors to ensure measurable reductions in public transport fares by October 1. This directive is part of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, which aims to leverage cheaper Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles to alleviate the economic burden on commuters.

Tinubu has ruled out returning to the petrol subsidy regime, citing the high cost and economic exposure it caused. Instead, the administration is focusing on building a CNG transportation ecosystem. To date, over 120,000 vehicles have been converted across more than 400 certified centres, supported by over 90 refuelling stations nationwide.

Evidence of fare reductions has already been reported in several states. In Borno, CNG and electric services charge between N50 and N100 on routes where commercial rates typically range from N300 to N600. In Kaduna, a mass transit scheme using 100 CNG buses has provided free transportation, reportedly saving commuters over N3.5 billion in its first year. Other notable reductions include the Lagos-Ibadan route in Oyo and various routes in Adamawa and Enugu.
