Nigeria's Tinubu urges police impartiality for 2027 elections

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma have called on the Nigeria Police Force to maintain strict professionalism and impartiality ahead of the 2027 General Elections. Speaking at the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO) in Owerri, the leaders emphasized that the police must serve as a national institution rather than an instrument for any political interest.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, President Tinubu stressed that neutrality is essential for public trust and the credibility of Nigeria's democracy. He noted that securing the electoral process involves protecting citizens, electoral officials, and materials, while preventing violence and intimidation.

Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu also charged officers to remain neutral, prepared, and accountable. Stakeholders at the retreat, including representatives from the Army, Navy, and Department of State Services, highlighted the need for intelligence-led operations, the use of technology, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration to ensure a peaceful and secure election.
