Nigeria: Political leaders and traditional rulers back Tinubu for 2027

Political mobilization for Nigeria's 2027 presidential election is intensifying, with various leaders and groups expressing support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election. Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, has urged northern political leaders to support Tinubu, citing his 2019 decision to back Muhammadu Buhari as a reason for regional reciprocity.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima revealed that only six of the 19 northern governors supported Tinubu during the 2023 election, but noted that the President has since forgiven those who opposed him. This sentiment of continuity is echoed by several traditional rulers, including the Oba of Benin and the Oba of Lagos, both of whom have endorsed the President's bid for a second term.

Additionally, youth and student groups, such as the Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership and the students' wing of Arewa for Asiwaju, have declared their support, citing improvements in security, infrastructure, and education. While internal political disagreements persist within the APC regarding campaign structures, the ruling party is actively engaging traditional institutions and regional stakeholders to secure a mandate for 2027.
