Nigeria's university lecturers union threatens strike over delayed 2025 agreement implementation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria says the federal government has failed to fully implement the 2025 FG/ASUU agreement signed in January, sparking threats of fresh industrial action. Zonal coordinator Adamu Al‑Abdullahi warned at a press conference in Nasarawa State University that the government has not set up the agreed Implementation Monitoring Committee and has left universities to apply allowances inconsistently, leaving lecturers with unpaid entitlements, salary shortfalls, pension delays and irregular welfare packages.

ASUU listed unresolved issues including arrears of a 25‑35 % salary award, promotion arrears, withheld salaries from the 2022 strike, unpaid pension contributions and third‑party deductions. The union condemned the Ministry of Education’s “No Work, No Pay” policy for strike‑affected staff and accused some state governors of ignoring the agreement despite participating in negotiations. The union said the situation could trigger renewed unrest in public universities if the government does not act swiftly.
