Nigeria's university staff union warns of strike over delayed 2025 agreement and urges action on insecurity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch at the University of Jos said the federal government has failed to fully implement the 2025 agreement on university staff welfare, citing the absence of an Implementation Monitoring Committee and selective payment of allowances such as the Consolidated Academic Tool Allowance and Earned Academic Allowance. The union warned that this “fragile peace within the university system could soon collapse” and that a repeat of industrial action across public universities is imminent unless urgent steps are taken.

At a separate news conference, ASUU leaders called on President Bola Tinubu and the government to tackle Nigeria’s growing insecurity and economic hardship. Chairperson Prof. Jurbe Mwolwus highlighted the resurgence of Boko Haram, banditry, farmer‑herder clashes and kidnappings, stating, “The country’s socio‑political and economic woes are daily compounded by the intractable insecurity problem.” He also urged the government to address rising poverty, hunger, unemployment and inflation, which he said are worsening the living conditions of Nigerians.
