Nigeria's Unregulated Taser Market Sparks Safety Concerns

Investigations reveal that tasers are widely available across Nigeria despite the absence of any legal framework governing their sale or use. The lack of regulation has created a loophole that criminal groups exploit.

In February 2025, Mary Aderemi was abducted after boarding a taxi in Abuja. While travelling, she was attacked by accomplices who used a knife, a gun and a taser, leaving her paralysed. The gang robbed her, withdrew over N100,000 from her bank account and used her details to fraudulently obtain a loan. Although she filed a police report and a court affidavit, the loan app continues to demand repayment.

The case highlights growing public‑security risks stemming from the unchecked circulation of tasers, which can deliver up to 50,000 volts. DUBAWA’s report calls for immediate regulatory action to curb illicit sales and protect citizens.
