Nigeria's Upstream Petroleum and Nuclear Regulators Merge Oversight to Cut Oil Sector Costs

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) met at the NUPRC headquarters in Abuja, where Chief Executive Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan and NNRA Director‑General Yau Idris agreed to harmonise their regulatory frameworks. The partnership aims to eliminate duplicated licensing and reporting requirements, create a “single‑window” system for operators, and lower overall compliance costs in the upstream oil and gas industry.

Both agencies will share information on the use of radioactive sources—such as well‑logging, industrial radiography and nucleonic gauging—and coordinate radiological impact assessments for Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM). The collaboration also includes joint training, capacity‑building and knowledge‑sharing on radiation protection, with the broader goal of improving investment climate and safety standards in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
