Nigeria's Upstream Petroleum Regulator Flags Infrastructure Limits on Oil Output

The chief executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, told Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji that insufficient infrastructure and asset‑integrity problems are the chief constraints on expanding crude production. She said the country could reach about 1.9 million barrels per day, after a recent peak of 1.86 million bpd in May, and emphasized the need to “grow the pie” for all industry participants.

Eyesan highlighted ongoing work to improve the operating environment, including the digitisation of NUPRC’s processes, capacity‑building for human resources, and deeper collaboration with the NRS to ensure transparent and sustainable revenue collection. The regulator also promoted the African Petroleum Regulators Forum (AFRIPERF), noting new member states such as Ghana, Somalia, The Gambia, Madagascar, Sudan, Guinea and Togo.

Both agencies pledged continued cooperation to address the identified constraints and boost Nigeria’s oil‑and‑gas revenue base.
