Nigeria's Young Fencers Target Medals at 2026 Commonwealth Championships in Lagos

The Commonwealth Fencing Federation Championships will take place in Lagos, Nigeria from August 9 to 14, 2026, marking the first time an African nation hosts the event.

Nigeria’s squad, featuring 17‑year‑old épée star Adebodunrin Thomas and 19‑year‑old Alex Chizim Aninyei, is aiming for strong results. Thomas hopes to reach the last‑16 round, repeating her Junior African Championships performance, while Aninyei seeks to progress from the pools to a medal finish. Coach Ibrahim Alogba said the team’s improved unity and recent exposure to top‑level competition give them a realistic chance of podium success. Thomas added, “I’m optimistic that I can replicate my performance from the Junior African Championships.”
