Nigrán restores historic Suero-Yañez cruceiro

The municipality of Nigrán has completed the restoration of the Suero-Yañez cruceiro in Parada, one of the oldest stone crosses in the region. The monument, which dates back to 1583, was severely damaged in January 2025 by Storm Herminia, which caused parts of the capital and the cross to break and fall.

Restoration work was carried out by the local firm ARA Restauración e Conservación de Patrimonio, led by Celia Casás, at a cost of €14,374. The process involved dry and wet cleaning, structural consolidation, the recomposition of broken granite fragments, and biological colonization removal.

While the physical repairs were completed relatively quickly, the project faced delays due to the administrative requirement of obtaining authorization from the Dirección Xeral de Patrimonio, which took approximately 15 months. Mayor Juan González noted that the council acted immediately following the storm to secure the fragments and prevent looting, ensuring the monument could be returned to its original state with a reinforced structure.
