NIH grantmaking oversight proposal faces bipartisan opposition
Bipartisan lawmakers and medical research organizations are opposing a reported plan to grant political appointees final authority over National Institutes of Health (NIH) grantmaking decisions.
Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins has urged the White House not to proceed with an executive order that would establish a board to oversee NIH funding. The proposed board, which would reportedly include OMB Director Russ Vought and NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, would require unanimous decisions to approve grants. Collins argued that such a move would threaten the objective of funding research based on scientific merit rather than political ideology.
The Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) also expressed deep concern, warning that additional layers of political bureaucracy could slow research progress and impact lifesaving breakthroughs for cancer patients. The NIH manages a budget of approximately $47 billion, making it the largest funder of biomedical research in the United States.
Reports suggest the administration's move follows accusations from OMB Director Vought that the NIH has funded initiatives at odds with the president's agenda. The proposal also potentially offers a mechanism to restrict funding for institutions such as Harvard University.
