NIH scientific talent drain increases under Trump administration
The return of the Trump administration is causing a significant exodus of scientific talent from the United States. Epidemiologist EB Dickinson, who previously worked at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has relocated to the University of Barcelona in Spain, citing instability and mass layoffs at the agency.
Under the direction of Donald Trump and Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Junior, the administration has moved to dismantle flagship NIH programs. Within one year, 5,844 grants were either suspended or canceled. While some were later reinstated, approximately 1,231 projects have been terminated, causing disruptions that have impacted patients in clinical trials.
The shift is also characterized by a rejection of diversity initiatives. Researchers have reported that keyword tracking—such as flagging the term 'trans' in studies involving transgenic mice—has led to the cancellation of research projects. These policies have created a challenging environment for scientists, particularly those within the LGBTQI+ community.
