Nihal Yuzergan analyzes first-round presidential election results
Bulgarian MP Nihal Yuzergan has attributed the smaller-than-expected lead of presidential candidate Iliyana Yotova in the first round of elections to several factors, including sociological forecasts that may have demobilized voters. Speaking on bTV, Yuzergan suggested that optimistic predictions created a sense of a guaranteed victory for Yotova, which discouraged some Progressive Bulgaria supporters from turning out to vote.
Other contributing factors cited include low voter turnout, party structure development, and the potential impact of unofficial party instructions from GERB and DPS that may have demotivated their supporters. Yuzergan noted that while Progressive Bulgaria is a key supporter, the Yotova candidacy also receives backing from the Bulgarian Socialist Party.
Looking toward the second round, Yuzergan expects anti-war voters to support Yotova. She also criticized opponent Andrey Gyurov, questioning his positions on peace and his previous security agreements with Ukraine, while arguing that his campaign promises regarding price regulation exceed the constitutional powers of the presidency.
