Nihon University develops AI avatars for dental hygiene training

Nihon University, in collaboration with several medical and educational institutions, has announced the development and implementation of ‘Avia Dental’, an AI avatar system designed to train dental hygienists.

The platform provides a self-directed learning environment where students can engage in role-playing exercises with two types of AI avatars: a patient and a doctor. Users practice conducting medical interviews with the patient avatar and subsequently reporting findings to the doctor avatar using professional terminology. This process is intended to help students and new professionals develop information gathering, communication, and interpersonal skills necessary for clinical practice and national examinations.

Currently, the system is being piloted at educational institutions in Japan and abroad, with over 150 students participating in the AI-driven training.
