Niigata mayoral election expected to be three-way contest
The upcoming Niigata mayoral election is shaping up to be a three-way contest. Incumbent Mayor Hachiichi Nakahara has expressed his intention to run for re-election, relying on his political networks gained from previous experience as a prefectural assembly member and member of the House of Councillors.
Challenging the incumbent are two newcomers seeking a change in municipal administration. Jun Hayatake, a management human resources consultant, aims to bring private-sector perspectives to city management, emphasizing the need to prioritize issues amidst declining tax revenues due to population decrease. Manabu Aoki, a Niigata City Assembly member, is also running as an independent, advocating for new political options and potentially drawing support from various opposition parties.
The election is scheduled to be officially announced on October 11, with voting taking place on October 25.
