Niigata selected as Japan's sole entry in National Geographic's Best of the World 2027

Niigata Prefecture has been named the only destination in Japan to be included in National Geographic's 'Best of the World 2027' list. The selection highlights the region's unique combination of large-scale art festivals and centuries-old fermentation traditions.

A primary focus is the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2027, which will mark its 10th edition. As one of the world's largest outdoor art festivals, the event will span approximately 200 villages with a theme of 'reuse,' utilizing local landscapes such as abandoned schools, terraced rice fields, and tunnels as exhibition spaces.

The region's fermentation culture, shaped by long, cold winters, is also a key attraction. This includes the production of sake, miso, and soy sauce. In Nagaoka City, the 'HAKKO HOUSE' and the 'Fermentation Trip' walking route offer visitors opportunities to experience local culinary traditions, including seasonal mountain vegetables and regional sake pairings.
